Detailed Project Report on Steel Wire Rope

STEEL WIRE ROPE

[EIRI/EDPR/5357] J.C.: 1581

INTRODUCTION

A steel wire rope consist of a central core around which are wound several helically or symmetrically twisted strands with a uniform pitch and direction. Each strand consists of a number of steel wires similarly twisted in one or more layers, around a central core. The central core may be made of hemp, wire, plastics or any other suitable fibre.

The manner in which each wire is twisted in a strand and each strand around the central core is termed the 'lay' of the rope. It may be clockwire or anticlockwire. If the lay of the wires in the strands and that of the strands in the rope are in the same direction, the rope is called a lang lay rope; if the lay of the wires in the strands and the lay of the strands in the rope are in the opposite direction then the rope is termed a regular lay rope. Regular lay ropes, because of their greater inherent stability, are in wider use than lang lay ropoes. The latter, however, possess greater resistance to abrasion.

Numerous type of wire ropes can be obtained by (i) changing the number and arrangement of wires in each strand, (ii) varying the number of strands in the finished rope, (iii) making rope either with fibre cores or with independent wire rope core and also by closing the ropes so that they are lang lay or regular lay and (iv) producing wire ropes in several grades of steel and in sizes from 0.16 cm (1/16 in) to 10 cm (4 in) in diameter.
