Detailed Project Report on Pig Iron

PIG IRON

[CODE: EIRI/DFR/5903] J.C.: 5903XL

INTRODUCTION

The production of iron and steel comprises approximate 95% of all to usage of metal produced in the world. On the average, iron and steels are the least expensive of the world's metals. In some applications iron and steel are supreme while in other areas they get competition from other metals and non-metals.

Iron making is an ancient art extending back to 1200 B.C.

The principal raw material for all ferrous products is pig iron which is produced through blast furnace. Smelting of iron are with coke and lime stone, gives pig iron. The final analysis of pig iron depends primarily on the kind of ore used.

a. Hematite (Fe2O3), or red ore, contains 70% iron.

b. Magnetite (Fe3O4) is black ore having 72.4% iron.

c. Siderite (FeCO3), brown ore, has 48.3% iron and

d. Limonite [Fe2O3 X (H2O)], brown ore, 60-65% iron.
