Detailed Project Report on Biodegradable Plastic Bag Manufacturing (Production of Compostable and Biodegradable Bags from Corn Starch)

Biopolymers are a inexhaustible plastic material produced from biomass such as corn, wheat, sugar cane and also potatoes. In fact most biopolymer products are not purely petroleum free, they are biodegradable and compostable. As soon as the biopolymer is placed in a compost environment, they are broken down into carbon dioxide and water by microorganisms, usually within 4-6 months.

Some biopolymers- such as polylactic acid (PLA), naturally occurring zein, and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate can be replaced as plastics, restoring the need or polystyrene or polyethylene based plastics.

Biopolymers (also called renewable polymers) are produced from biomass for use in the packaging industry. Biomass comes from crops such as sugar beet, potatoes or wheat: when used to produce biopolymers, these are classified as non food crops.

With the problem caused by plastic bags increase each year, biodegradable plastic bags sound like perfect solution. These bags are designed to completely decompose, leaving no discernible trace.

The biodegradable bags whirled into compost after four to six months if exposed to water or sun or disposed. They show like plastic bags but are made of materials like natural starch and vegetable oil derivatives. If placed in a glass of water at normal temperature, the bag dissolves in a day. And when placed in a glass of boiling water, it dissolved in just 15 seconds. These bags take less than 180 days to biodegrade naturally once discarded. So users can throw them away without worrying about harming the environment. The bags are even edible and will cause no harm to animals if ingested.

The demand of these bags is gradually increasing as rapid pace.

Biodegradable plastic bags are created using material that will allow the bags to  completely decompose after a period of time. Most biodegradable plastic bags are said to decompose in three year, although many completely disintegrate in less time. The Bags leaves no discernible trace and are completely harmless to the environment.
