BARIUM CARBONATE FROM BARIUM SULPHIDE (BLACK ASH)
[EIRI/EDPR/1677] J.C.: 498
INTRODUCTION
Barium carbonate (BaCO3), also known as with rite, is a chemical compound used in rat poison, bricks, ceramic glazes and cement. With rite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. The crystals are invariably twinned together in groups of three, giving rise to pseudo-hexagonal forms somewhat resembling bipyramidal crystals of quartz, the faces are usually rough and striated horizontally. The mineral is named after William Withering, who in 1784 recognized it to be chemically distinct from barytes.
It occurs in veins of lead ore at Hex ham in Northumberland, Alston in Cambria, Anglezarke, near Chorley in Lancashire and a few other localities. With rite is readily altered to barium sulfate by the action of water containing calcium sulfate in solution and crystals are therefore frequently encrusted with barytes. It is the chief source of barium salts and is mined in considerable amounts in Northumberland. It is used for the preparation of rat poison, in the manufacture of glass and porcelain and formerly for refining sugar. It is also used for controlling the chromate to sulfate ratio in chromium electroplating bath Barium Carbonate is a is white amorphous powder. It is one of the basic Barium salts and finds applications in many areas.
Natural barium carbonate was formerly mined com merially in England. Precipitated barium car bonate is the most widely used barium chemical with the exception of natural barite. It is a fine white powder with an absolute density of 4.25 and bulk density varying from 0.80 to 2.16 g/em3 (50-135 lb/ft3).
Depending on the grade. The commercial material assays 99% BaCO3. 0.06-0.12% total sulfur as S. Particle size varies with the grade.
Ranging from 0.1 to 10gm with considerable agglomeration. The index of refraction is low 1.6. and hardness is 30-3.75 on Mohs scale.
In contrast to calcium and strontium carbonates barium carbonate is thermally stable. Conversion to barium oxide is effected by heating with carbon.

In black and white sets the faceplate glass contains 10oBaO. Some barium carbonate is also used in the batch for color television feceplate glass formulation.
The good largest use for BaCO3 is in brick and clay products. The barium iron reacts with sulfate ions to prevent their precipitation on the surface of the brick, tile, or other product. The appearance of the white precipitate is called blooming or scumming. The average usage is 4 to 6 lb BaCO3 per 1000 bricks produced. This is usually a large excess over the stoichiometric amount. There are wide is usually a large excess over the stoichiometric amount. There are wide variations in usage depending on sulfate content in the clay and the ability of the brickmaker to achive uniform blending of the BaCO3 in the grog.
BaCO3 is also used as a component in frits and glazes for coating of chinaware and steelware such as stoves and refrigerators. Blane fixe. Synthetic barium sulfate made from BaCO3 and H2SO4 consumed 4000 t of BaCO3 in 1975. Three companies make blane fixe coating of photopaper and one company makes blane fixe for use in human gastrointestinal X-ray diagnosis.
