Paraffin waxes constitute the major bulk of such waxes, the other two types; produced in comparative quantities; also command a good market because of their certain specific end uses. The paraffin waxes are solid hydrocarbons at room temperature.
Slack wax is a refinery term for the crude paraffin wax separated from the solvent dewaxing of base stocks. Slack wax contains varying amounts of oil (ranging from 20 to 50wt. %) and must be removed to produce hard or finished waxes. If the slack wax separated from residual oil fractions, the oil-bearing slack is frequently called petrolatum.
Slack wax is petroleum product; the raw material of paraffin wax, Slack wax is a mixture of oil and wax in yellow or brown color, processed by pressing to decrease the oil content and discoloring by special powders after heating to produce paraffin wax. Slack wax verifies from light to heavy grades based on its melting point. Melting point 50-52 C is categorized in light grades and 53-55 C is heavy grade. All the types of slack wax are used as blending components or waterproofing agents in the manufacture of various industrial products.
Hard Paraffin Wax, also known as paraffin wax, is a white to an off-white crystalline purified mixture of solid hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. Paraffin wax is ideally suited for the manufacture of premium quality candles, cosmetic creams & pharmaceutical ointments, petroleum jelly, and as a general purpose lubricant in industry.
Petroleum waxes are broadly defined as the waxes naturally present in the various fractions of crude petroleum. The presence of wax in lubricating oils is determental and it must be removed from the oils. However, after separation from lubricating oils, wax constitutes a valuable and interesting product with special characteristics for a number of important uses.
Petroleum wax like other petroleum derivatives, is essentially a mixture of hydrocarbons. It differs from other petroleum products in the fact that wax consists of hydrocarbon belonging mostly to one family- the paraffin series. The paraffin present in wax are mostly of long chain molecules and are, therefore, solid at normal temperature.
In normal paraffins the carbon atoms are joined together in one continuous chain.
