A bicycle is a two‑wheeled vehicle that is moved with pedals, which are attached to the wheels with a gear and chain. It is steered with handlebars. A bicycle, also called a pedal cycle, bike, or cycle, is a human‑powered or motor‑assisted, pedal‑driven, single‑track vehicle having two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other. A bicycle rider is called a cyclist or bicyclist.

Bicycles were introduced in the 19th century in Europe. By the early 21st century more than 1 billion bicycles were in existence worldwide. These numbers exceed the number of cars both in total and by the number of individual models produced. They are the principal means of transportation in many regions and also provide a popular form of recreation.

The “dandy horse”, also called the Draisienne or Laufmaschine (“running machine”), was the first human means of transport to use two wheels in tandem. It was invented by the German Baron Karl von Drais and introduced in Mannheim in 1817 and Paris in 1818.

In the early 1860s French inventors Pierre Michaux and Pierre Lallement added a mechanical crank drive with pedals on an enlarged front wheel. This design, called the velocipede, was the first mass‑produced bicycle.

Later innovations included wire‑spoked wheels, chain drives, pneumatic tires introduced by John Boyd Dunlop in 1888, and the safety bicycle developed by J.K. Starley in 1885. These innovations led to the modern bicycle design that remains common today.
