Detailed Project Report on tri ethylene glycol (teg)

TRIETHYLENE GLYCOL (EIRI-1083)

Triethylene glycol is a transparent, colorless, low-volatility, moderate-viscosity, watersoluble liquid. Under normal conditions, there is no detectable odor; under high vapor concentrations, a slightly sweet odor may be detected. It is completely miscible with water and many organic liquids. Triethylene glycol has properties similar to other glycols and may be used preferentially in applications requiring a higher boiling point, higher molecular weight, or lower volatility than diethylene glycol. The hydroxyl groups on triethylene glycol undergo the usual alcohol chemistry giving a wide variety of possible derivatives. Hydroxyls can be converted to aldehydes, alkyl halides, amines, azides, carboxylic acids, ethers, mercaptans, nitrate esters, nitriles, nitrite esters, organic esters, peroxides, phosphate esters and sulfate esters. Triethylene glycol may be used directly as a plasticizer or modified by esterification. The solubility properties of triethylene glycol are important for many applications. End-uses for triethylene glycol are numerous.
