INTRODUCTION
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a rigid and tough, closed-cell foam. It is usually white and made of pre-expanded polystyrene beads. EPS is used for disposable trays, plates, bowls and cups; and for carry-out food packaging (including the hinged lid containers popularly known as "clam shells"). Other uses include molded sheets for building insulation and packing material ("peanuts") for cushioning fragile items inside boxes. Sheets are commonly packaged as rigid panels (size 4 by 8 or 2 by 8 feet in the United States), which are also known as "bead-board".
Due to its technical properties such as low weight, rigidity and formability, EPS can be used in a wide range of different applications. Its market value is likely to rise to more than US$ 15 billion until 2020
Expandable polystyrene is available in a range of particle sizes from 0.2 to 3.0 mm. and in shapes varying from round beads to ground cheinks of polymer. These particle are prepared either by heating polymer particle in the presence of blowing agent and allowing the blowing agent to penetrate the particle or by polymerizing the styrene monomer in the presence of blowing so that the blowing agent is entrapped in the polymerized bead. Typical blowing agents used in such processes are the various isomeric pentanis and hexanex, halo carbons or mixture of these materials.
Thermocole or expanded polystyrene as the name suggests, is polystyrene expanded to more than two times the volume of polystyrene. Polystyrene foam is an excellent packaging material because of combination of various properties such as lightness, rigidity, shock absorption thermal insulation, resistance to moisture and weathering abcence of taste ordour, snow white colour etc. It can be moulded to any desired shape viz. glass cup & plated etc. Thermal insulation and packaging are the main end uses. The manufacturing of chemicals petro-chemicals, fertilizers, drugs, pharmaceuticals, synthetic yarn, electronics, optical and other major precision goods are examples. Beside manufacturing industries air conditioning and refrigeration re major user of thermocole. Air-conditioning and refrigeration play technical role in nuclear power generation, defence applications, construction of concrete dams: telephone exchange hospitals and various other industries.
In such applications of climate and product temperature control there are numerous vessels of different shapes and sizes storing cold fluids, miles of pipe lines to transport them and cold warm air ducts all of which needs to be lined with thermal inside them against a hostile and changing environment. Failure of temperature control in any part of such technical process could effect the functioning of all interlinked operations and bring the whole production to stand still.
Before polystyrene form was invented, expanded corkboard-rigid mechanically strong, having a closed cell structure was recognized as the undisputed material for low temperature insulation polystyrene foam left cork far behind because its closed cell structure is more perfect and being plastic, it is to subject to not. Polystyrene foam insulation is also several times lighter, therefore, easier to transport, store, handle and fix.
