Detailed Project Report on tannic acid

TANNIC ACID
[CODE NO.3060]

Tannic Acid is white or yellowish astringent powder (molecular formula: C14H10O9) derived from nutgalls, or a lustrous yellowish to light brown amorphous, powdered, flaked, or spongy mass (molecular formula: C76H52O46) made from the bark and fruit of many plants.

Tannic acid, a specific commercial form of tannin, is a polyphenol. Its weak acidity (pKa around 6) is due to these phenol groups in the structure. … Tannic acid is a basic ingredient in the chemical staining of wood. The tannic acid or tannin is already present in woods like oak, walnut, and mahogany. Tannic acid can be applied to woods low in tannin so chemical stains that require tannin content will react.

Tannic acid is the most common mordant for cellulose fibers such as cotton. Tannin is often combined with alum and/or iron. The tannin mordant should be done first as metal mordents combine well with the fiber-tannin complex.

Tannic acid or Tannic is a constituent of several tanning wood also. The pure acid is also called gallotanic acid or diagallic acid and has the formula C14H10O9. In other words the tannic acid is the genric name for a widely disseminated group of vegetable products, so named from their property of converting raw hide into leather.

Tannic acids are soluble in water and their solutions which have an acid reaction and a strigent taste are coloured dark blue or green by ferrous salts, a property utilized in the manufacture of Ink, some Tannins appear to be glycosides of gallic acid, since they yield this acid and a sugar on hydrolysis (that is oak tanni) while others yields protocatechuic acid and phloroglucind (e.g. mornina-tanin) while others yields protocatechic acid and phloroglucind (e.g.morina-tannin), common tannin however is digallic acid.

In tannic acid or gallotannin, digallol residues are found combined with glucose.

Tannic acids are substances of high molecular weight and apparently they posses structure of considerably complexity. In their decomposition by heat or hydrolysis, they yield, according to the conditions observed - gallic acid, pyrogallol, phlorolucinol and other less familier compounds, Certain tannis which yield glycose upon their hydrolysis appear to be esters of gallic acid or digallic acid with the sugar.

Common tannin or tanic acid, C14H10O9.2H2O occures to the extent of 50% in gallnuts, and also in tea, sumarch and other plants. It may be obtained by extracting powered gallunuts with a mixture of other and alcohol.

The tannin of oak C19H16O10, which is found; mixed with gallic acid, ellagic acid and quercite, in oak bark, is red powder;  its  aqueous solution is coloured dark blue by ferric chloride. The tannin of coffee C30H18O16 found in coffee beans, is not precipitated from its solution by gelatin Hydrolysis by alkalins solution gives a sugar and cofferic acid, while fusion with potassium hydroxide gives protocatechuic acid. Maringa tannin or maclurin C13H10O6H2O, found in chlorophora tinctoria hydrolyzes on fusion with caustic potash to phloroglycinol and protocatechuic acid catechu tannin occurs in the extract of Minosa catechu and kino tannin.
