PRINTING AND LAMINATION ON PAPER FOIL
[EIRI/EDPR/1844] (J.C.705)
INTRODUCTION
Laminated/Coated paper was first developed commercially owing to demand for better printing results.
It has been used for many years and is being used satisfactorily in certain grades of paper.
Under coated paper comes art paper. The other varieties of coated paper which the mill can produce without incurring any additional investment are chrom paper, art, card etc. These types of papers can be either coloured or white. The base material is generally white paper. The base material is coated with certain chemicals and plastic resin mix to impart certain. Characteristics desired by the various end-users. Art paper is coated on both sides, making it possible to print it either side. Whereas chromo paper is coated on one side only. Both of these papers fall under the category of friction glazed paper.
The materials obtained from the union of paper and synthetic resins have been produced commercially for a long time but they received special emphasis during and immediately after World War II. These familiar products include resin coated and saturated papers both functional and decorative, for packing and decorative uses and the resin saturated papers which are later converted into and utilized as synthetic leathers. In these applications, the resin constitutes a large percentage of the finished sheet and the over all properties more or less approach those of resious component. Another type of paper resin combination is produced for enhancing or altering some fundamental property of the sheet itself in such a manner that the finished product retains the general characteristics of the paper from which it was produced. Examples of such products are the wet strength and scuff resistant papers treated printed and blue print papers and some grease proof papers.
There are two major types of paper resin combination products. In the fist type the resin is distributed uniformly through the sheet and each individual fiber is coated and/or impregnated with the resin. The resin may be in the form of a latex dispersion as discrete particles. The treated or impregnated papers belong to this class. The second class contains the coated or surface treated sheets with the resin distributed in a layer on one or both of the surfaces of the sheet. Laminated papers also fall in the class. Lamination of paperware is done with thermosetting resins. The thermosetting resins are transformed by heat into an infusible solids and this reaction can be accelerated by the use of certain catalysts.
