Detailed Project Report on Potassium Nitrate

POTASSIUM NITRATE

[EIRI/EDPR/1573] J.C. 368

INTRODUCTION

Potassium Nitrate is the most important ingredient of mixed fertilizers. Most of the Potassium nitrate, (KNO3) produced, commercially, in the United States is based on the reaction of potassium chloride. The reaction is manipulated chemically to yield chlorine as a co product. The process is typical than other process, because in this process nitrosyl chloride is the product during the reaction. This is very dangerous compound.

Potassium Nitrate is also in the form of nitre, saltpeter. When KNO3 is heated, dangerous fire and explosion is possible.

This is one of the oldest of potassium compound to find application in the arts.  Recovery of potassium nitrate from earthy deposits, its production and recovery from the products of bacterial fermentation of organic matter & organic residues, from the nitrate plantations of the Napoleonic wars etc., have been matters of considerable importance. Once gunpowder has been introduced in European  warfare, much was dependent on the adequate supplies of this vital raw material.  In addition arts of  pieces which needed gunpowder especially mining &  quarrying, were dependent on this material. The earlier process consists of recovering  potassium nitrate from natural sources such as  chile deposits.   Many processes have been tried but process  employing the  reaction  of  saltpeter with  potassium  chloride  has  been successful.

The success of the process depends on the fact  that the  solubility  of  potassium nitrates  increases  rapidly  with temperature,  that  of sodium chloride very little, so  that  the bulk  of  the  sodium  chloride formed in  the  reaction  can  be crystallised & separated at an elevated temperature, leaving  the potassium  nitrate  in solution to be recovered by  a  subsequent operation.
