Rs 8000 cr worth Indian bottled water market growing at 19% pa: Report
Increasing consumption of bottled water, rising spending capacity, spiralling population, growing scarcity of pure drinking water, rising awareness on health-consciousness among Indian consumers, and increasing per capita consumption along with growing market segment for bulk water are among the major growth factors driving the Indian bottled water industry.
The country’s bottled water market is registering a growth of 19 per cent pa. Currently the Indian bottled water market (both organised and unorganised sector) is valued at Rs 8,000 crore and is on the threshold of being worth Rs 10,000 crore in the current fiscal 2012-13, according to a research report titled "The Indian Bottled Water Market : Unveiling its Thirst" released by Ikon Marketing Consultants.
Consuming bottled water in India is become a necessity now. The Indian consumer is perceiving bottled water as safe to consume. Currently the small packing is holding maximum market share due to affordability and availability. The one litre water bottle holds significant market share. However, in recent years the institutional supply is picking up with supply of bulk packs, as per the report.
Bottled water in India has taken the path of growth via the organised retail format. Bisleri continues to hold leading position by having 36 per cent of the market share among national players. Kinley and Aquafina are fast catching up, with Kinley holding 25 per cent and Aquafina approximately 15 per cent. Parle Agro’s Bailley is holding 6 % share among national players. The rest includes other organised brands such as Kingfisher, Oxyrich, McDowell’s No. 1 together holding 18 per cent market share.
South India is the biggest consumer of bottled water representing more than half of the market due to water starved areas followed by national brands.
Bottled water market in India is likely to maintain same growth momentum in years to come and would touch Rs. 15, 000 crore by 2015 and by the end of the decade can register more than fourfold earnings to the tune of Rs 36,000 crore.
Global bottled water market increased by 40-45 per cent over the past five years currently valued at around US$ 85-90 billion. Indian bottled water market is around only 2 per cent of global bottled water market.
“Rising trend of bulk water consumption in homes and institutional segments will pave the way for bulk water pack to acquire half of the total bottled water market within next 4-5 years. The major growth contributors will be the mushrooming growth of bulk water pack suppliers due to less entry barriers to the industry and almost negligible cost of industry exit, range bound supply and the continuous rise in population with inadequate drinking water facilities,” said Taruna Sondarva, senior consultant, Ikon.
Rising environmental concerns and high transportation cost along with difficulty in brand recognition are proving as major bottlenecks for Indian bottled water market.
“We are optimistic on the growth of the bottled water market. Increasing scarcity of safe drinking water, changing lifestyles and aggressive expansion by market players may lead this industry to be the next oil industry in coming decade,” said Azaz Motiwala, founder & principal consultant, Ikon Marketing Consultants.
