INTRODUCTION
Maleic anhydride (2,5-Furandione) is having colorless needlesd 0.934 (20/4oC) mp 53oC and is soluble in water, acetone, alcohol etc. and its field of application for polyester resins, alkyd coating resins, pesticides etc.
Maleic Anhydride in (MAN) is available commercially in 99% purity in both molten, liquid and solid forms (flakes, pellets, rod or briquettes).
Maleic Anhydride is polyfunctional chemical of significant commercial interest world-wide. It has a, B-unsatilation associated with acid carbonyl function. About 90 percent of the maleic anlychide at present produced is derived from benzene oxidation. Other raw materials, butene for example, have been tried but far so have gained little importance. The future relative abundance of benzene and butanes as well as improvements in butene oxidation technology will help to determine whether butenes can account for a greater percentage of the foodstock. The growth of maleic anhydride consumption, however will probably maintain a continuous demand for benzene as a raw material even if butenes gain a third of the market. About 600 to 800 million kg. of benzene is presently being used to produce 500 to 600 million kgs of maleic anhydride world-wide.
