MALACHITE GREEN
[CODE NO. 1781]
The triarylmethane dyes are of brilliant hue, exhibit high tinctorial strength, are relatively inexpensive, and may be applied to a wide range of substrates. However, they are seriously deficient in fastness properties, especially fastness to light and washing. Because of these deficiencies, the use of triarylmethane dyes on textiles has decreased as dyes from other chemical classes with superior properties have become available. Interest in this class of dyes was revived with the introduction of polyacrylonitrile fibres. Triphenylmethane dues are readily adsorbed on this fiber and show surprisingly high light fastness and wash fastness properties when compared with the same dyes on natural fibres. The durability of acrylic fibres, howver, created an even greater demand for fastness properties. Modifications of the classical triarylmethane dyes in order to improve these properties met with only limited success since they were generally accompanied by a reduction in tinctorial strength. Research led to the development of novel dye types from other chemical classes such as the pendant cationic dyes, in which the localized positive charge is isolated from the chromophoric system and which were designed especially to give high lightfastness. Similarly, the diazahemicyanine dyes, which offer both brightness and fastness, gradually replaced triarylmthane dyes for acrylic fibres. However, the most important commercial black dye for acidmodified fibers is till a mixture of the classical triarylmethane dyes, malachite green and fuchsine, because of hgh tinctorial strength and low cost.
