HYDROGEN PEROXIDE (BY AUTO-OXIDATION PROCESS)
[EDPR/DPR/6902] J.C.: 3817, 1991
INTRODUCTION
Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2), mol wt. 34.016, is a weakly acidic ear colorless liquid miscible with water in all proportions. The four atoms are covalently found in a non-polar H-O-O-H structure. It is commercially available in aqueous solutions over a wide concentration range. Discovered by the nard in 1818, it has been an article of commerce since the mid-19th century. Hydrogen peroxide is the most widely used peroxide compound orginally, it was produced by the reaction of barium peroxide and sulfuric acid for use as ana antiseptic, but this process and use have been superseded. Its scale of manufacture and use have increased markedly since about 1925, when electrolytic processes were introduced to the United States and industrial bleach applications were developed. Now prepared primarily by anthraqunone autoxidation processes hydrogen peroxide is used widely to prepare other per oxygen compounds and as a non-polluting oxidizing agent.
Extremely minute quantities of H2O2 are sid to occur in atmosphere and natural water. It has also been found in the fermentation of tea, in leaves of sugar, cane and in culture of various bacteria.
H2O2 is a most versatile chemical used in Various industries for bleaching, chemical synthetis, environmental control/effluent treatment sterilisation etc. The single most important constituent of Hydrogen peroxide is the "active oxygen" that it provides in the aforemntioned end-uses. The active oxygen is obtained by the controlled decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide with water as the by-product. Hence whether it is bleaching agent or chemical synthesis, the use of Hydrogen Peroxide provides a very "clean" process without the production of any harmful or environmentally unsafe products. The stable H2O2 in Indian climatic condition is 50% W/W manufactured by National peroxide Limited, Mumbai.
