EXTRACTION OF CURCUMIN AND TURMERIC OIL

It needs to be understood well that curcumin is an important pharmacological agent that is extracted well from turmeric rhizome. In the past, subcritical water has been used as a solvent for extraction of flavours, antioxidant components as well as fragrances from different plant materials. It needs to be noted well that subcritical water is a good solvent for curcumin as well as for other safe organic compounds. It is considered to be safer than other organic solvents. The alternative method for increasing the quality of extract refers to the subcritical water extraction of curcumin from turmeric rhizome. 
 
The extraction and purification of natural pharmaceuticals in recent years from the medicinal plants has been noteworthy due to decreased side effects in the human body. It is well known that one of the most important medicinal plants is turmeric rhizome. This plant was used in traditional medicine, but its interest in recent years increased due to its increased use as a food colorant. 
    
Due to presence of curcuminoids, the yellow characteristic of turmeric is quite visible. Among the curcuminoids, curcumin is the major pharmacological agent having the best of inhibitory effects for various types of cancers, which in turn arrest the activation as well as propagation of carcinogen. Research studies have indicated that curcumin produces different effects such as reduction of cholesterol, reduction of blood, myocardial infarction (MI), platelet aggregation, suppression of thrombosis and much more. Also, it suppresses symptoms associated with type-2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis (MS), and few more. 
 
The extraction of curcumin and turmeric oil needs certain steps which include the following: 
 
- Sample preparation
- Hydrodistillation
- Soxhlet Extraction
- Curcumin Quantification Analysis
- Response Surface Design
- Few more technical and scientific steps. 
 
There is an alternative method of extraction of turmeric and turmeric oil by Continuous Water Circulation Distillation. This is one of the most important important production methods for distillation and is carried out in different ways as per the botanical material as well as the condition of the material. Three types of distillation processes are used viz. Water, Water and Steam as well as Direct Steam. 
 
It should be understood well that water distillation is used when the plant material has been dried and will not be damaged by boiling. This material tends to come in direct contact with boiling water. Care needs to be taken that the water does not boil away and the plant material does not burn. In many research studies, much emphasis was laid on designing of continuous water circulation process which in turn increases the yield from turmeric leaves to rhizomes. 
 
Thus, the research studies in the past have investigated upon different methods for extraction of turmeric and turmeric oil. These have been discussed in detail successfully herewith, so that it is understood well as to how the extraction process is well executed scientifically and in a technical manner, without any kind of glitches or scientific obstacle or hindrance.
