Sand paper as it is commonly called is an abrasive formed to rub the rough surface of wood, metal and other materials to make them into a smooth finish which is required particularly before painting and polishing etc. Sand paper is also denoted as abrasive paper. Emery cloth and Flint/Glass paper. They are classed as coated abrasives. Sand paper a name given to coated abrasive products are made by coating one side of packing material such as cloth or paper, with an adhesive which is usually hide glue or an “ A stage phenolic resin to which enbedded is hard polishing material”. Abrasives are commercially useful hard substances utilized in the form of granules or powder for shaping, cleaning, or polishing surfaces. The substances are characterised by high hardness, high melting point and chemical inertness. In addition to grinding and polishing, the general properties of abrasives make them well suited for other applications, including refractoroes, wear resistant surfaces and in chemically inert shapes for catalyst supports and tower packings.
