Detailed Project Report on Chromite Beneficiation Plant

CHROMITE BENEFICIATION PLANT

INTRODUCTION

Chromium is the 21st most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. Its atomic no. = 24 is placed in Group VI B of the periodic table alongwith tungsten & molybdenum.

The only commercial ore of Chromium is the Chromite (FeO. Cr2 O3). Chromite contains 68% Cr2O3 & 32% FeO. This works out about 46% chromium in the Chromite ore. As a matter of fact, the Cr/Fe ratio drastically varies in the ore depending on the origin of ore.

Most chromite ores are rich enough for hand sorting. However, fines or low-grade ores can be effectively concentrated by gravity separation methods yielding concentrates with approx. 50% Cr2O3. The Cr/Fe ratio does not change as the original ore is concentrated by gravity.

Supplies of high grade lumpy ore is decreasing in the world while availability of high grade fines & low grade chromite has increased. This condition has necessitated adoption of suitable technologies for concentrating & up grading the fines & low grade ores to commercially extract able levels.

Agglomeration process has been found suitable of converting low grade ores & fines into usable form.

i) Briquetting with a binder,

ii) Producing oxide pellets by kiln firing,

iii) Production of pre-reduced pellet by furnace treatment.

The above three methods of agglomeration are in vogue.

Chromite deposits occur in Olivine & pyroxene rocks and their derivatives. They appear in strati form deposits several feet deep, covering a wide area and are usually mind by under ground methods. Sometimes, isolated lenticular, tubular or pod-shaped deposits can have as high as millions of tonnes in a stretch.
