INTRODUCTION

Metallurgical knowledge had its beginnings in the Stone Age when same ancient craftsman first recognized the difference in behaviour amongst certain of the "rocks" with which he was working. The stones familiar to this primitive aetisan were hard and brittle and were capable of being fashioned into tools and weapons only by fedious shaping, chip by chip. His first encoumter with metal then, undoubtedly native copper or gold, must have been an exciting experiences.

Here was a susbstance which, instead of fructuring, yields to the blows of this stone hammer. Here was a material which could be formed much more precisely, which was pleasing to the eyes, which could be worked to a keener edge and which more over somehow acquired greater atrength the more it was worked.

From the use of native metal to the deliberate reduction of an ore by carbon is a long step, and one which is the subject of much interesting speculation. It seems likely that the first such reduction was accidental possibly the result of a fortunate combination of circumstances. In which the heat of a comp fire, together with carbon from the charted logs succeeded in reducing copper ore contained in the surrounding atones an other occasions the stones may have contained additional metals such as tin and the relationship between the fire, the charged logs, and the particular types os stones was recognized, and the discover, the first metallurgist, began to produce metals at will.
