Detailed Project Report on Calcium Nitrate

CALCIUM NITRATE

[EIRI/EDPR/1482] J.C.: 266

INTRODUCTION

Calcium nitrate, sometimes called Norwegian saltpetre was the first synthetic nitrogenous fertilizer to be put on the market. It has not, however, proved to be entirely satisfactory for this purpose. At the beginning of World War II, it accounted for about 8% of the nitrogen consumed in world's agriculture. It is manufactured mainly in Europe.

Calcium nitrate is generally known as lime nitrate or nitrocalcite or lime salt peter or Norwegian salt peter. It is available in two form one is in tetra hydrate form whose chemical formula is Ca(NO3.4H2O). Another is simple calcium nitrate whose chemical formula is Ca(NO3)2.

CHARACTERISTICS AND PROPERTIES

Nearly pure crystallized calcium nitrate is so very hygroscopic that it will melt if handled in the hand. In fact, the commercial product that was first put on the market was often necessary to ship it in air tight wooden bags. Likewise before it could be distributed properly in the soil, it was often necessary to mix the fertilizer with peat dust or some similar materials. Lime was sometimes added as a dryer but the objection to this practice was the reduction of the nitrogen content and the increase in transportation charges per unit of nitrogen which resulted. At other times it has been mixed with potassium sulphate and magnesium sulphate for the purpose of improving its physical condition, but with indifferent success.

Calcium nitrate nowdays is available in granular form and from the dust. At one time use of calcium nitrate was objected to because the dust released when material is broadcast often blistered the skin and shrank the shoes of work persons. With the present product this objection has to some extent been overcome. As it flows rather freely through the ordinary fertilizer distributor caremust be taken to regulate the flow if proper distribution is to be obtained.
