BLACK PEPPER
The Black Pepper generally known as “Kalimirch or Golmarich” whose botanical name is Pepper Nigrum. This has different names in different languages as in Sanskrit - Maricha, Ushana, Hapusha, Hindi - Kalimirch, Bengali Kalamorich, Golmorich. Marathi - Kalimirch, Mire, Gujrati - Kalamari, Kalomirich, Telegu - Miriyala tige, Tamil - Milagu, Kannad - Kare menasu, Malayalam - Kurumulaku, Nallamulaku. It is a branching, climbing, Perennial shrub, mostly found cultivated in the hot and moist parts of India, Ceylon and other tropical countries. Branches stout, trailing and rooting at the nodes; leaves entire, 12.5-17.5 by 5.0-12.5 cm., very variable in breadth, sometimes glaucous beneath, base acute rounded or cordate, equal or unequal; flowers minute in spikes, usually dioecious, but often the female bears 2 anthers, and the male, a pistillode; fruiting spikes very variable in length and robustness, rachis glabrous; fruits ovoid or globose, bright red when ripe; seeds usually globose, testa thin, albumin hard. Pepper is one of the most ancient crops cultivated in India and has probably originated in the hills of south-western India, where it is met with in a wild state in the rain forests from orth Kanara to Kanniyakumari. The pepper vine in its wild state is mostly dioecious, and consequently rately sets fruit.
