BENZYL ALCOHOL FROM BENZYL CHLORIDE USING WATER
[EIRI/EDPR/3467] J.C.: 1550
INTRODUCTION
Benzyl alcohol (C7HaO) and its esters are found in the essential oils of a wide variety of flowers and in balsams obtained from the exudation of trunks of resinous trees. Benzyl alcohol is one of the few chemicals used extensively not only in perfumery but in totally unrelated fields as well, such as pharmaceuticals, lacquers etc. Large quantities of benzyl alcohol are therefore manufactured of which only a portion is used in the perfumery industry.
Benzyl alcohol has a somewhat weak odour and its main use is as a solvent in perfumes and pharmaceuticals. It is represented by the following structural formula:
Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol with the formula C6H5CH2OH. The benzyl group is often abbreviated "Bn" (not to be confused with "Bz" which is used for benzoyl), thus benzyl alcohol is denoted as BnOH. Benzyl alcohol is a colorless liquid with a mild pleasant aromatic odor. It is a useful solvent due to its polarity, low toxicity, and low vapor pressure. Benzyl alcohol has moderate solubility in water (4 g/100 mL) and is miscible in alcohols and diethyl ether. The anion produced by deprotonation of the alcohol group is known as benzylate or benzyloxide.
Benzyl alcohol is produced naturally by many plants and is commonly found in fruits and teas. It is also found in a variety of essential oils including jasmine, hyacinth, and ylang-ylang. It is also found in castoreum from the castor sacs of beavers.
Benzyl alcohol is chemically known as Alfa-Hydroxytoluene, or Phenyl methanol or Phenyl Carbinol, is colourless liquid with a mild aromatic odor, and occurs either free or as an ester in oils of Jasmine, Castoreum, gardenia and Ylang-Ylang and balsams of Peru and tolu. It undergoes the characteristic reactions of a primery alcohol forming ester, ethers, halides etc. and additionally forms ring substituted derivatives. It forms a large number of azeotropes which are usefur in separating it from mixtures. It is miscible with ether and chloroform.
Benzyl alcohol is readily esterified with a variety of organic acids in the presence of an acid catalyst.
It results chiefly in dehydration and polycondensation products. These include benzyl ether, benzyl benzyl alcohol (mixed isomers, Primarily ortho and para) and polymeric benzyl benzyls. Benzyl alcohol can be oxidized to the aldehyde or the acid.
Benzyl alcohol is one of important organic chemical which has versatile application.
