INTRODUCTION

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a fine white powder or dust that occurs naturally. It is naturally opaque and bright, which makes it useful for use in paper, ceramics, rubber, textiles, paints, inks and cosmetics.

TiO2 pigment is produced by two major industrial routes from its ore, which is either ilmenite (ferrous titanate) or either natural or synthetic rutile. Ilmenite-based raw materials are used for the wet Sulphuric acid process, while rutile is the major input for the high-temperature chloride process.

One of the most important uses of titanium is in the paint industry. It is outstanding for its coverage area as one Kg of titanium dioxide can cover five times more area than other paints; it is thus replacing white lead commonly used in white paint. It has outstanding corrosion resistance in sea water.  The oil industry exploits not only the corrosion resistance of titanium in sea water but also its resistance to sulphide bearing crudes and gases and in hydrocarbon processing generally.  TiO2 has a host of other too and holds a very high future potential.

This chemical is industrially the most important of the titanium compounds. It occurs naturally in three crystalline forms, exemplified by the minerals, rutile, anatase and bookie. Bulk of world’s supply of rutile comes from Australia. In India rutile along with ilmenite are found in the beach sands of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra. The high-grade ilmenite deposited (58% - 60% TiO2) at Chavara Quilon district of Kerala are among the largest in the world. The reserves of ilmenite in beach sands of the country are estimated at about 356 million tons (India - Hand Book of commercial Information III, 244).
