RUBBER BAND
[EIRI/EDPR/4511] J.C.: 2144XL
Rubber band is a rubber product used in our daily life. It is ring of a thin strip of very stretchable rubber. The story of rubber bears witness to man's endeavor to gain ascendancy over the frugality of nature. The story began in 1845 with the discovery of vulcanization which promoted the commercial demand for crude rubber. There was slaughter exploitation of the wild plants for collection of latex. But the primitive methods of production could not cope with the rising demand. The plantation industry gained momentum from rising prices and rubber production nearly reached the million tonne mark in 1939. In spite of the record rise in production, the inadequate supplies and the erratic price movements revealed limited product capability of the plantation industry. Under the circumstances, a search for new raw materials becameinevitable and synthetic rubber was the result.
India's rubber industry is nearly five decades, old. There are over 1,400 rubber manufacturing unit spread over the country. The total production of rubber goods is estimated at Rs. 340 crores. In a span of over 50 years the Indian Rubber Industry has given grown from strength to strength.
Rubber band is commonly cut from the rubber tubes. The rubber used for these rubber bands has specific characteristics and properties. For imparting the desired characteristics to the rubber different formulations are available which may be used in compounding the rubber. The rubber industry manufacturers almost every conceivable rubber product, from tiny toy balloons to gaint tractor and sero types, needed for internal consumption as well as for exports. The rubber goods industry manufacturers a wide range of products such as automobile tyres and tubes, bicycle tyres and tubes, rubber and canvas foot-wear, various types of rubber hoses, railway fittings and automobile rubber components.
The largest single item of manufacture is the automobile tyres and tubes accounting for 50 per cent of consumption of rubber.
