PRODUCTION OF CASHEWNUT SHELL LIQUID (CSNL)
CODE: EIRI/EDPR/4800 J.C. 3021
INTRODUCTION
Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) is a versatile by-product of the cashew industry. The nut has a shell of about 1/ 8-inch thickness inside which is a soft honey comb structure containing a dark reddish brown viscous liquid. It is called cashew nut shell liquid, which is the pericarp fluid of the cashew nut. It is often considered as the better and cheaper material for unsaturated phenols. C.N.S.L. has innumerable applications in polymer based industries such as friction linings, paints and varnishes, laminating resins, rubber compounding resins, cashew cements, polyurethane based polymers, surfactants, epoxy resins, foundry chemicals and intermediates for chemical industry. It offers much scope and varied opportunities for the development of other tailor - made polymers.
Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) is a versatile by-product retrieved from the Cashew Processing Plant. Cashew Shells are the outer shell of the Cashew Nuts which are part of the Cashewnut Fruit along with Cashew Apples. This shell contains viscous liquid, which is released on steaming of raw cashew nuts. This Cashew Nut Liquid is used to produce phenols after undergoing a De-carboxilation process.
Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) liquied is used from many years in Friction material, contributing to the binding of the Constituents as well as friction enhancers in the form of dust obtained from the cured resin.
The shell of the nut is approximately1/8th inch thick. Cashew nut shell liquid is the pericarp fluid of the cashew nut.
Natural CNSL is a mixture of phenolic compounds with aliphatic side chains and these are 70% anacardic acid 5% cardonal and 18% cardol. CNSL is typically treated with high temperatures, which decarboxylate anacardic acid, yielding cardonal, additional distillation of CNSL removes cardol leaving cardonal as the primary component in CNSL.
