DESCRIPTION: Ferric Pyrophosphate occurs as a tan or yellow-white powder. It is insoluble in water, but is soluble in mineral acids.
Function: Nutrient
Micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs) have a significant effect on global health, impacting approximately 2 billion people worldwide. Pregnant women and young children are among the highest risk group for micronutrient deficiencies and the health consequences are dire. MNDs are most extensive in developing countries, since tuber diets (rice, corn, wheat, potato, and cassava) and refined cereal grain lack in critical nutrients: iodine, iron, folic acid and zinc. In wealthier countries, dietary diversification is more achievable with greater access to micronutrient rich foods (fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, milk and dairy products). Two of the most widespread MNDs are iron and iodine deficiencies.
Other common deficiencies include folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B12 and zinc deficiencies. Micronutrient malnutrition (MNM), or Hidden Hunger, not only affects large populations, but also is a risk factor for many diseases, leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality.
