Cationic softeners have been defined as the materials which disperse or dissolve in water, concentrate and orient at interfaces and ionize in such a way that the cation includes a hydrogen-carbon chain, which is hydrophobic and contains around 8 to 25 carbon atoms. In simple terms, Organic softeners & conditioners that provides a soft, supple, soapy, silky, voluminous surface, creased, fluffy , smell fresh and smooth handle for textile substrates are chemically termed as Cationic powder softeners,is white crystalline powder.These are molecules that have a positive charge on the hydrophilic end which are sap amines, amido amines, imidazoline and quaternary ammonium salts. Cationic softeners exhibits the best unmatched permanent finishing properties to the cellulosic materialsand are therefore used for household as well as for various industrial articles.It increases the lubricity of yarns and gives sheen to the fibres, also minimizes the loss in physical properties of the fabric.It is also used as an antistatic agent for loose fibres. These softeners are mainly used for coloured textile substrates in textile industries. Though it has few inherent drawbacks like its poor compatibility with anionic surfactant products such as optical brighteners, oil emulsions, sulphonated oils and dyeing auxiliaries and poor biodegradability of many quaternary ammonium compounds.This softener can be used in fabrics like, polyester, terry cotton, woollen, silk and cotton to provide a rich resilient softness to the fabric.However, they show tendency of yellowing. Fabric softener& conditioner makers recommend not over-using this on clothes labelled as flame-resistant, as it makes fabric more flammable due to its fat-based nature.
