INTRODUCTION
Packaging is an essential part of physical distribution system and a tool for marketing the product in that it has to protect the commodity from atmospheric interaction and transportation hazards and must have aesthetic attraction and appeal so that it may help in increasing sales.
Traditionally Jute, Tinplate, paper, Timber plywood, Glass, Aluminium etc. were used in different forms for packaging. Entry of plastic packaging brought revolution. Now more and more goods are being packed in plastics.
Plastics includes various materials like low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, pvc films, polystyrene films, polyester film, polypropylene etc. These raw materials are further processed many a time to get materials like basically oriented polypropylene film.
Bottles, tins and cans are fast becoming things of the past, at least where their utility pertained to packaging. They are giving way to plastics which is the unthing today, almost in everywalk of life.
Many reasons are attributable for the introduction of plastics and the exit of bottles, like their cumbersomeness, breakability and the like.
Packaging of liquids like, ghee, vegetable oils etc. has been made simpler in plastic sachets which are claimed to be more hygienic and economical. Ghee, vanaspati can be easily and conveniently packed in Refil packs for light weight handling.
