INTRODUCTION
Coaltar is produced by the dry distillation of coal and is therefore a byproduct in the manufacture of coal gas. For a considerable time after the discovery of coal gas, the tar produced was considered merely an encumbrance and was used mainly as a pigment or fuel.
The purification of coaltar is affected by distillation. The crude tar, which contains a considerable quantity of ammonia water, is furst freed from this by gravitation. It is then transfered to the vertical stills, which are connected with a warm surrounded with water which can be cooled or warmed as occasion requires. Distillation of the fraction boiling above 270oC is usually completed under reduced pressure.
